Anjeni Sherilyn Del “Waasegiizhigookwe” Real, Lac du Flambeau, WI: With hearts full of sorrow and reverence, we share the passing of Anjeni Sherilyn Del Real, known lovingly by her spirit name “Waasegiizhigookwe”, meaning “Woman of the Shining Day.” Anjeni passed away on April 18, 2025, in Lac du Flambeau, Wisconsin, at the young age of 26.
Anjeni was a radiant light in the lives of all who knew her—her energy, kindness, and fierce love for her community made her a beloved daughter, friend, sister, and inspiration. She was deeply rooted in her Ojibwe heritage, walking the path of her ancestors with pride, dignity, and grace. Whether through her involvement in cultural ceremonies, her advocacy for Indigenous rights, or her everyday acts of compassion, Anjeni embodied the strength and beauty of her people.
Born on October 15, 1998, Anjeni grew up surrounded by the natural beauty and strong traditions of Lac du Flambeau. From a young age, she showed a deep reverence for the land and the teachings passed down through generations. She was a gifted storyteller and a passionate learner, always eager to explore the history and language of her people. Her voice carried not just wisdom but a spirit of healing, often bringing comfort to those around her during difficult times.
Affectionately remembered for her bright smile and contagious laughter, Anjeni brought joy to every room she entered. She carried the name “Waasegiizhigookwe” with pride and purpose, lighting up her community with the strength of her presence. Her generosity knew no bounds—whether offering a listening ear, a helping hand, or simply her time, Anjeni gave with an open heart.
Though her life was tragically brief, the impact she made was profound and enduring. Her passing is felt deeply across the Lac du Flambeau community and beyond, touching all who were fortunate enough to know her. In the stories shared, in the songs sung in her honor, and in the ceremonies that carry her name, Anjeni’s spirit will continue to live on.
A funeral service to honor Anjeni’s life and legacy will be held on Tuesday, April 22, 2025, at the Multi-Purpose Building in Lac du Flambeau. Friends, family, and community members are invited to gather in remembrance, to celebrate her journey, and to offer support to one another as we grieve her loss and cherish her memory.
